by Media Xpose

Target Audience: End-user (Domestic and Commercial)

What is the purpose of this press release? To reduce the number of inquiries we get on the validity of the CoC on different Gas types and clarify questions that might arise on the same topic

What is the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for Gas?

A CoC for Gas attests to compliance with safety standards and regulations for gas installations. Information regarding work done on the gas system is recorded on this certificate confirming that the installation is compliant, and the gas system is safe.

Only a registered Gas Practitioner can issue a CoC for gas installations. These Gas Practitioners have undergone training through the specific Gas Associations for specific gas types.

For system safety and compliance, it is the end user’s (homeowners’ or business owners’) obligation to make sure only registered gas practitioners are used to undertake gas work within their scope of licensing. A gas installation without a valid CoC is deemed illegal, and property owners may face liability risks. It is very important to have a valid CoC for legal and insurance purposes, especially in the event of a gas incident.

When should the CoC be issued?

A CoC shall be issued on completion of an installation, repair, modification, maintenance, or commissioning of a gas system, a gas appliance, an air conditioning unit, or a refrigeration unit.

Where and how to find Registered Gas Practitioner(s)

SAQCC Gas has an online database where you can find all the registered Gas Practitioners. Visit www.saqccgas.co.za, and search by:

  •  Province
  • SAQCC Gas Registration Number
  • Surname
  • Town and Suburb or
  • Company

Validity of the CoC

A CoC does not expire unless modifications, alterations, repairs, or maintenance have been done on the existing gas system since the original CoC was issued. If any work has been done post the original CoC, a new CoC is issued for the work completed and the original CoC will still be in place for the balance of the installation.

On change of ownership, is the CoC issued under the current owner or the new owner?

In the case of Domestic and Commercial installations, a CoC is needed for the sale of property, for a change of ownership (i.e. house, flat, restaurant etc.). A new CoC is issued and provided to the seller which replaces the previous CoC. The Gas Practitioner issuing the CoC must check the entire gas system to ensure it complies and is safe to operate before issuing a CoC.

End.
