GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, one of Cape Town’s premier entertainment destinations, recently underwent a major HVAC system upgrade to improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. This initiative was necessary to address the aging infrastructure and optimise energy usage within the facility.

Challenges of an Aging HVAC System
Since its establishment in 2000, GrandWest’s HVAC system had endured years of operation under Cape Town’s variable climate conditions. Additionally, exposure to airborne contaminants from nearby industrial zones contributed to the degradation of the HVAC equipment. These factors contributed to increased maintenance costs, system degradation, and rising energy consumption.
A Phased Replacement and Upgrade Plan
Recognising the need for a reliable and energy-efficient solution, GrandWest partnered with SFI Group to implement a phased approach for the replacement and upgrade of its air handling units (AHUs). A local AHU brand was selected, offering not only high-quality equipment but also technical support to ensure seamless integration and long-term operational benefits.
The key upgrades included:
- Full Replacement of Aged AHUs: New AHUs were installed, equipped with cutting-edge EC (Electronically Commutated) plug fans, improving system performance and redundancy.
- AHU Upgrade and Refurbishment: Existing units were upgraded with new EC plug fan arrays, enhancing efficiency and extending their operational lifespan. Some AHU chilled water coils were replaced to improve energy transfer efficiency

The Role of EC Plug Fans in Redundancy and Sustainability
A significant highlight of the upgrade was the integration of EC plug fans. These advanced fans played a crucial role in achieving higher efficiency, operational redundancy, and sustainability:
- Enhanced Redundancy and Reliability
Traditional HVAC systems often rely on a single large fan, which poses a risk of total system failure if it malfunctions. By implementing EC plug fan arrays, GrandWest introduced a level of redundancy that ensures continuous airflow even if one fan fails. This multi-fan configuration distributes the workload, preventing a complete shutdown and allowing maintenance to be performed without disrupting operations.
- Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings
EC plug fans are known for their variable speed control, allowing precise airflow adjustments based on demand. Unlike conventional fans that operate at a fixed speed, EC plug fans dynamically adjust their output, significantly reducing energy consumption. This efficiency translates to:
- Lower electricity bills due to reduced power usage.
- Decreased carbon footprint, aligning with GrandWest’s sustainability goals.
- Optimised cooling and ventilation, ensuring a comfortable indoor environment for guests and staff.
- Sustainable HVAC Operations
With growing emphasis on sustainability, GrandWest’s HVAC upgrade supports environmental responsibility by:
- Reducing energy waste through intelligent fan speed modulation.
- Improve AHU efficiency by eliminating belt drives, as EC plug fans are direct drive.
- Lowering noise pollution, enhancing the guest experience in entertainment and hospitality spaces.

Key Takeaways from the Upgrade
- Increased Energy Efficiency: The integration of EC plug fans and upgraded AHU components has led to a noticeable reduction in energy consumption, lowering overall operating costs.
- Improved System Reliability: The strategic use of EC plug fan arrays ensures consistent airflow and prevents disruptions due to fan failures.
- Extended Equipment Lifespan: By modernising existing AHUs and implementing more efficient components, the facility has extended the longevity of its HVAC infrastructure.
GrandWest Casino’s HVAC upgrade, in collaboration with SFI Group, stands as a model for sustainable and resilient building management. By incorporating EC plug fan technology, the facility has successfully enhanced its energy efficiency, improved system redundancy, and taken significant strides toward long-term sustainability.
This project underscores the importance of proactive HVAC modernisation in commercial buildings, ensuring that entertainment venues like GrandWest can continue to provide a world-class experience while meeting energy efficiency and sustainability standards for years to come.
